Women Veterans Will Plan Memorial In Springfield

Mar 28, 2016

There is a memorial to U.S. women veterans in Washington D.C. The City of Springfield wants to build one in Oregon. Women vets met Monday to talk about what it will look like.

At the meeting, Springfield staff showed a sketch of the proposed layout of a plaza in Willamalane Park where the new Women Veteran's Memorial would be.

It’s not easy to bring together all aspects of women in the military in one piece of art. The group looked at two concepts for a statue developed by artist Ellen Tykeson. They didn’t like either one. U.S. Army Veteran Shelley Corteville says she wants the memorial to be inclusive. She also wants women to be the ones who plan it.

Corteville: “Women have been pretty dismissed, women veterans, women on active duty right now and I think it’s really important that our service, our dedication is recognized.”

Springfield has procured a state grant of $52 thousand for the women veterans’ memorial and other improvements at Willamalane Park. The hope is to have the memorial complete in March of 2017.
