World Junior Championships Visitors Explore Lane County

Amanda Butt

The 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships came to a close Sunday. Fans, athletes, and coaches from around the world visited Eugene last week and set out to explore Lane County’s sights and attractions.

More than 51,000 people spent their free time perusing local stores or visiting natural landmarks. Molly Blancett from Travel Lane County said their booth at the meet saw more than 300 visitors.

Blancett: “For many people, this was their very first time in the United States and they didn’t know when they would be back. So they wanted to put their toes in the Pacific Ocean; they wanted to go hike to a waterfall; they wanted to go to the wineries and taste the Willamette Valley wine that we have so abundantly here.”

Many visitors also enjoyed shopping at the Eugene Saturday Market and at the Valley River Center.

The city also provided a letter of interest to host the 2019 World Championships. Bids are due this fall and if selected, Lane County can expect more international visitors in the upcoming years.
