Groups Gather To Show Support For Young Immigrants

Dave Fidanque with the ACLU of Oregon says Central American children who have come to the U.S. seeking asylum have a right to legal representation and an immigration hearing before being summarily deported.

Some Oregonians are concerned for the thousands of children crossing the southern U.S. border from Central America. Last week, a small group gathered in Portland to express concerns holding up signs welcoming the young immigrants.

Dave Fidanque is member of Oregon's American Civil Liberties Union. He describes a class action lawsuit filed earlier this month in Seattle.

Wildfires Pose Threat To Sage-Grouse

Wildllife managers want to focus on protecting sage grouse habitat for the birds’ 11-state range including Oregon. Habitat destruction is the biggest threat to the bird and intense wildfires in the West are not making it easier.

The U.S. Interior Department told governors at a meeting last week in Colorado, the sage-grouse could end up on the endangered species list if more isn’t done to protect forests.  Bend Fire Captain Karl Findling is a former worker for the Bureau of Land Management. He says firefighters are noticing changes to wildfires themselves, and in weather patterns.

Oregon Receives Low Grade For Its Housing Market

Oregon received a "D" grade for its housing market, according to the Corporation for Enterprise Development. The State's foreclosure rate is higher than the national average, and is considered to be sluggishly pulling out of the mortgage crisis.

Winter Is A Good Time To Check Radon Levels

The Oregon Health Authority is encouraging residents to check levels of Radon levels in their homes this month. They say winter is the best time to test for the cancer-causing agent.

Radon occurs naturally in the soil and is a byproduct of decaying uranium. It has also been identified as the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths for non-smokers. Brett Sherry, the state radon coordinator for the Oregon Health Authority says when windows and doors are closed in the colder months, levels are easier to detect.

Veggies, Enthusiasm Sprout In Oregon's School Gardens

There are about 500 vegetable gardens planted at Oregon schools, and the state's first School Garden Summit takes place on Mon., Jan. 13 near Salem.

Growing food at schools is part of a new trend in Oregon. Proponents say the practice teaches kids about science and maintaining a healthy diet. Monday, the First School Garden Summit in Salem hopes to educate and expand on the movement.
