According to census estimates released last week for cities of 50 thousand or more,  Salem has once again nosed out Eugene as the state’s second largest city.  As of July 2013,  Eugene’ s population was about 159 thousand, while Salem topped  160, 000.

Portland remains Oregon’s largest city by a factor of four.  Bend was the clear state leader in percent of population growth last year at two-point-nine.  Eugene, Springfield, Salem and Corvallis all saw small population gains, with none registering as much as one percent.

Grammy-winning trumpeter Chris Botti returns to the Willamette Valley with a performance at the Hult Center in Eugene on May 1st, not far from where he grew up in Corvallis. The #1 ranked Oregon Ducks softball team completed their Civil War series with Oregon State Monday with a sweep.

In the final game in Corvallis, the Ducks crushed the Beavers 18-0, after winning games on Saturday and Sunday.

Over the course of the three-game series, Oregon outscored OSU 38 to 7.  The Ducks should stay at #1 in this week's national rankings.

Student enrollment at OSU grew at a rate of 8% a year for several years. That population increase sparked a community livability initiative by OSU president Ed Ray and Corvallis Mayor Julie Manning.

Project Homeless Connect

In an effort to attract more people, the Benton County Project Resource Connect has dropped the word "homeless" from the name of their event.
 

Nationwide, homeless connect events are held as a one-stop shop for people needing assistance accessing services. Benton County Project Coordinator Johanna Peerenboom says they've dropped the word "homeless" from the title of their event.

Voters in Corvallis Tuesday approved a 5-year property tax levy to fund city services including the library, pool, senior center, public safety and social service organizations.

The levy will raise more than 3 million dollars per year. The measure passed narrowly with 52 percent of voters in favor. Measure 2-86 will charge property owners about 82 cents for 1000 dollar assessed value.

Corvallis Property Tax Measure Up For Vote

City of Corvallis

November 5th, residents of Corvallis will vote on a levy to maintain library operations, among other city services.

If approved, the measure would increase property taxes by about 82 dollars per assessed $100,000 value. About one-third of the five-year levy is for the library. Other funds are earmarked for the Osborn Aquatic Center, three additional police officers, fire prevention and social services.
