The Eugene City Council Monday approved restrictions on fireworks.

The council voted to limit the days when fireworks can be set off. They can be used only between June 23rd and July 6 and on December 31st and January 1st.

Another ordinance would make the use of illegal fireworks enforceable under the city's social host ordinance so that residents or home owners are held responsible when they're ignited.

The council has been hoping to crack down on illegal fireworks because of the noise, fire danger and injuries. Councilor Mike Clark:

That's because at any given time there might only be a few deputies on the roads. Sergeant Carrie Carver is Public Information Officer with the Lane County Sheriff.

Two men have been charged with damaging old growth trees in northern California’s Redwood National and State Forest. The arrests are the first in response to a recent increase in illegal poaching of redwood burl.

You’ve probably seen countertops or furniture made from redwood burl. The richly colored, swirling grain is prized for its beauty and can fetch a hefty price. A coffee table or bar top can sell for thousands. That kind of money – combined with a largely unregulated market for the wood – has proved irresistible to poachers in the northern California forests.

Weese: "We had some great applicants, and I think if anything that made it take a little longer."
