Lane County Sheriff Tom Turner has learned he was not chosen to be Chief of Police in Florence.

Florence has had an interim police chief since January, when the former chief retired. They'd hoped to have the position filled by April. City Recorder Kelly Weese says there was a good reason for the delay:

Weese: "We had some great applicants, and I think if anything that made it take a little longer."

The University of Oregon is reeling after a report released Monday about the alleged sexual assault of a young woman by three members of the Men's Basketball team.

The Lane County District Attorney's office  says it will not file charges against Damyean Dotson, Dominic Artis and Brandon Austin because of a lack of evidence. Eugene Police investigated the three Ducks for first degree rape. A female student says they sexually assaulted her repeatedly over several hours on the night of March 8th and early March 9th during and after a party near campus.

Last week, Eugene Police arrested a 19-year-old Sheldon High School student accused of soliciting minors for sexual photos and videos. Eugene Police Lieutenant Doug Mozan says Elliot Thomas Cumer is charged with two counts of "Use of a Child in A Display of Sexually Explicit Conduct."

Mozan: "And to put that in lay terms, what that means is: 'Compelling a person or facilitating a person who is under that age of 18 to take sexually explicit photographs.'"

Lane County

After a court decision earlier this month, Lane County has changed its policy on holding inmates at the request of federal immigration officials.

According to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, requests to hold, or detainers, are used to “identify and ultimately remove criminal aliens” that were taken into local custody.  ICE asks for holds up to 48 hours. This policy has been widely criticized by immigrant rights groups.

Attorney Lauren Regan with the Civil Liberties Defense Center says government is quietly chipping away at first amendment rights to protest in Eugene.
