Lane Transit District has received the final piece of funding from the federal government for the West Eugene Em-X Expansion. The Federal Transportation Administration has apportioned the remaining $50.54 million needed to continue the project.  LTD Director of Customer Services Andy Vobora says they were fortunate to get the funding they requested because there is a lot of competition at the federal level.

The Oregon Transportation Commission has set aside a pot of money for projects that fall outside of traditional roads and bridges. Lane Transit District has been awarded $2.8 million to build three new bike/pedestrian bridges in West Eugene.

Anyone who's ever tried to walk or bike across West 11th Avenue knows it can be sketchy.

Vobora: "You see people run across the street in the middle of the street and it's really unsafe."

Andy Vobora is with LTD. He says many people don't realize how many residents live just south of the traffic laden street.

A lawsuit against Lane Transit District and the Federal Transit Administration has been rejected, with prejudice, by a federal judge.

Our Money Our Transit had filed the suit claiming that the way the agencies did their environmental impact process for the West Eugene EmX was inadequate under the National Environmental Policy Act, or NEPA.

LTD Spokesman Andy Vobora says U-S District Court Judge Thomas Zilly had a lot of leeway in assessing the process.

U.S. Senator Ron Wyden participated in a ceremony Thursday (today) in Springfield highlighting the expansion of a new EmX bus stop. The Senator also talked about the importance of increasing access to public transportation, and cutting emissions as well.

Wyden: “It’s clear to me that we need the Executive Branch playing offense on this issue and to put in motion the steps that really only Congress can work with Executive on and that is the challenge of dealing with climate change when you have to bring in India, China, and so many of the developing nations.”

Sacred Heart’s RiverBend hospital in Springfield has a new EmX stop that is closer to the facility. About 50 supporters and dignitaries attended a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday (today).

Land Transit District’s EmX now stops at the Pavilion station located on RiverBend Drive. It provides direct access to Lane County’s largest medical center for thousands of patients and employees. U.S. Senator Ron Wyden stressed the importance of expanding public transportation.

Dan Dreier is at the wheel. He’s a fit guy with a quick smile. I’m catching a ride with him to talk about his job and the nearly 30 years he’s spent driving people around.
