Eugene 4J Budget Predicted To Be Tight

Last (Monday) night, the Eugene 4J budget committee presented projections for next year. Although the situation has improved, the school district will have to make compromises.

The overall reaction to the early school budget forecast has been positive. Eugene 4J spokesperson Kerry Delf:

"We are looking forward to a year next year that is much less of a financial challenge than this year and some past years have been."

Facing a Monday deadline with no sign of major donors in sight, the Eugene City Council Wednesday tweaked its offer to purchase Civic Stadium. Last November, the city proposed buying Civic for $4.5-million on the condition that donors stepped up with $5.5-million. At Wednesday’s work session, the council voted to remove the contingency requirement. Councilor Mike Clark expressed doubt about the school district choosing the city’s proposal. And he doesn’t think the city should over extend itself financially.

Districts Add Make-Up Days To Calendars

Lane County students are enjoying winter break this week. However, due to the snowstorm in early December, schools will be in session for additional days in 2014.

According to Eugene 4J School District's Kerry Delf, before make-up days were announced, they heard this feedback from parents and staff:

Delf: "Please please please, add these days back during the school year, if you can, rather than adding them on to the end of the year while still having furlough days. So that is in fact what we did."

Four groups have offered to purchase Civic Stadium. The Eugene 4J School District has been looking to sell the 75-year old ball park in south Eugene for more than a decade.

Eugene 4J declared Civic Stadium surplus property in 2002. This most recent request for proposals to purchase the 10 acre site closed Tuesday. Purchase offers came from the City of Eugene, The YMCA, Fred Meyer and the non-profit Friends of Civic Stadium. 4J Spokeswoman Kerry Delf says the school board will evaluate the proposals based on the money offered and other factors.

People who want to save Eugene's historic baseball park are making a last ditch effort. They're raising money in hopes to convince city leaders to purchase Civic Stadium.

The goal is to raise 1 point 2 million dollars. The money would go toward purchase and restoration of the 10 acre site in South Eugene. Friends of Civic Stadium wants to preserve the playing field and 75 year old wooden grandstand. The non-profit has been fighting to preserve Civic for years. Dennis Hebert is president of the organization.
