That's the goal for the nonprofit Track Town USA, which aspires to expand the sport nationally. Eugene is preparing to package its track enthusiasm and deliver it to other cities.

The singular reason more than 1,000 track and field athletes are in Eugene this week is to vie for a spot on the 2016 Olympic team. Spectators have many different reasons to be at Hayward Field.

The University of Oregon Women's Track and Field squad was unable to repeat as NCAA champions. But they came very close Saturday at historic Hayward Field.

Last year Raevyn Rodgers wasn't well known when she won the 800 meters. She continued her dominance in the event this year, earning back-to-back titles. Following in her footsteps, redshirt freshman Ariana Washington made a huge first impression, winning the 100 and 200 meters.

The University of Oregon's Vin Lananna will lead the U.S. men's track and field team at the Olympics in Rio next year.

Lananna has been instrumental in bringing the U.S. Olympic Trials to Eugene's Hayward Field in 2008 and 2012. He also successfully led efforts to bring the world championships here in 2021.

Lananna says being selected as head coach for the Olympic team is a huge honor. He sees it as his number one accomplishment.

Hayward Field hosted the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships this weekend. A heat wave pushed temperatures into the mid 90s making it even hotter for athletes on the track. KLCC’s Corinne Boyer was there.

Saturday’s early morning cloud cover provided some relief during the Track and Field Outdoor Championships. Sprinklers and misters were set up around to keep the crowd and athletes cool.

A busy season's wrapping up at Hayward Field Thursday through Sunday in Eugene. The USA Track and Field Championships will decide the team for the World Championships in Beijing. The USA Junior Championships determine the athletes under 20 for the Pan Am Games in Toronto. The dual events are poised to provide drama.

Temperatures are forecast in the high 90's for the weekend, unusual for Hayward Field. As Track Town USA's Vin Lananna says, in 10 years in Eugene he has yet to apologize for the weather:

The University of Oregon women's track and field squad followed in their male teammates' footsteps from the day before with a victory at Hayward Field Saturday.

It was the second time the women's track and field team has won the national championship and a repeat victory for the men's. The spotlight was on favorite Jenna Prandini, who despite a team disqualification in the 4 x 100 relay, bounced back to win the 100 meter dash.

The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship is halfway done. The last two days feature nothing but finals. Both the University of Oregon’s men and women finished their first day in the lead.

The Duck men are looking to repeat last year’s title win. They performed well, as they were expected to, on Wednesday. Senior Sam Crouser won the javelin for the second year in a row and has high hopes for the team:

The NCAA track and field championships take place this week at Hayward Field. For the first time ever, the men's and women's teams will compete on different days.

The coaches and administrators decided early this year to separate the competitions. Shortly after, ESPN announced plans to expand its TV coverage of the event, including airing Friday's men's championship on ESPN and Saturday's women's championship on ESPN 2. Some athletes are less than enthusiastic.

Millions of people around the world will be watching Eugene this weekend. This year’s Prefontaine Classic track and field meet takes place Friday and Saturday at Hayward Field.

Friday night’s free program includes the men’s 5,000 and 10,000 meter races. Local favorite Galen Rupp will run the 5K and Olympic champion Mo Farah is entered in the 10K. Prefontaine spokesman Jeff Oliver says the entire meet will be outstanding:

Eugene, Oregon has been awarded the 2021 World Track and Field Championships after many weeks of quiet negotiations.

Eugene earned a close second in last fall’s bid for the 2019 World Championships. In February, organizers appealed to IAAF president Lamine Diack, and were encouraged to campaign for the 2021 event. Track Town USA President Vin Lananna says he wasn’t feeling confident until this week. He spoke from Beijing after the council meeting:

Today (Tuesday), Doha Qatar was chosen over Eugene and Barcelona to host the 2019 World Track and Field Championships.

It took two rounds of voting for the 27 member IAAF council to reach a decision. After Barcelona was eliminated, Doha received 15 votes and Eugene, 12. Vin Lananna, President of Track Town USA, spoke from Monaco, where the announcement was made:

Lananna: “We appreciate all of the collaboration, the excitement, the encouragement, and having the guts to step forward and take it on the world stage.”

Nick Symmonds represented the USA in the men's 800-meter at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the 2012 Olympics in London. The Springfield resident has a new book out about his career on and off the track.

People around Eugene or the University of Oregon in the next week may hear more foreign language speakers than usual.  There are thousands of athletes and coaches here for the World Junior Track and Field Championships. Helping orient those visitors is a group of U of O student ambassadors.

After Friday night's fireworks, the patriotic weekend continued at Hayward Field. The country's best track and field athletes under 20 competed Saturday and Sunday for a chance to represent the United States at the World Junior Championships.

The U.S. has never hosted a world championship track meet. In two weeks, Eugene will welcome junior athletes from 212 countries. This weekend, several local competitors earned their right to compete for the United States at the event.

Before the world comes to Eugene later this month, the U.S. has to select its athletes. This weekend, the best American track and field competitors under age 20 will compete at Hayward Field.

Only the top two U.S. finishers from this weekend will go to the World Junior Championships. There will be plenty of local talent to root for. Five current U of O athletes and five freshmen recruits will compete on their home track. One of the veteran Ducks is Maggie Schmaedick, a 2013 Sheldon High School graduate. She enters Sunday's 5K race with the country's fastest junior time.

The University of Oregon men's track and field team ended a 30-year dry spell by earning the national title at Hayward Field Saturday. The Oregon women took third in the NCAA Championships held in Eugene.

More than 11,000 fans packed the stands at Hayward Field on the final day of competition. The crowd finally saw the sun break through the thick clouds in the men's 1500 meter; Oregon senior Mac Fleet won his last collegiate race.

It was a windy second day at the NCAA Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field. Many athletes have superstitions or rituals before they compete, and track is no different. KLCC’s Desmond O’Boyle went out in search of some of those stories and has this audio postcard.

They scheduled the best for last at “distance night” of the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene: the 10,000 meter race.

The crowd stayed until after 9 pm to cheer for Galen Rupp, a native of Oregon and former U of O star. Rupp reportedly asked for a fast 10K race.

The Nike Oregon Project runner hoped to break his own American record, set in 2011. As the laps ticked by, he remained in the lead group of four to six runners, holding a pace almost equal to his record time. But with two laps to go, he took the lead.

This week, Eugene is hosting representatives from the International Association of Athletics Federations, track and field's governing body. They are reviewing progress for July's World Junior Championships, being held in the United States for the first time.

Abby Hoffman is a four-time Olympian and a member of the IAAF Council. She says this visit is focused on logistics, such as coordinating with the U of O to house and feed an estimated 1,600 athletes.

Eugene gets to keep its Track Town USA title all the way to 2021. Earlier this week the University of Oregon and the NCAA reached a long term agreement to keep the Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field.

When any Championship event concludes, the NCAA conducts a survey of the student athletes who participated. The resounding feedback is the ability to compete in a crowded stadium with a knowledgeable fan base. UO Associate Athletic Director Vin Lannana says Hayward Field delivers that atmosphere to spectators and competitors.
