Eugene Loses Bid For World Championships

Today (Tuesday), Doha Qatar was chosen over Eugene and Barcelona to host the 2019 World Track and Field Championships.

It took two rounds of voting for the 27 member IAAF council to reach a decision. After Barcelona was eliminated, Doha received 15 votes and Eugene, 12. Vin Lananna, President of Track Town USA, spoke from Monaco, where the announcement was made:

Lananna: “We appreciate all of the collaboration, the excitement, the encouragement, and having the guts to step forward and take it on the world stage.”

Eugene Submits Bid To Host World Championships

Hayward Field could host the World Junior Track & Field Championships in 2019.

Eugene is in the running to host the World Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2019. If it's selected, this would be the first time it's been has been held in the U.S. since the event began in 1983.

People around Eugene or the University of Oregon in the next week may hear more foreign language speakers than usual.  There are thousands of athletes and coaches here for the World Junior Track and Field Championships. Helping orient those visitors is a group of U of O student ambassadors.

Young Track And Field Athletes Earn Right To Represent Team USA

After Friday night's fireworks, the patriotic weekend continued at Hayward Field. The country's best track and field athletes under 20 competed Saturday and Sunday for a chance to represent the United States at the World Junior Championships.

The U.S. has never hosted a world championship track meet. In two weeks, Eugene will welcome junior athletes from 212 countries. This weekend, several local competitors earned their right to compete for the United States at the event.

USA Junior Track Championships Free To Attend This Weekend

Before the world comes to Eugene later this month, the U.S. has to select its athletes. This weekend, the best American track and field competitors under age 20 will compete at Hayward Field.

Only the top two U.S. finishers from this weekend will go to the World Junior Championships. There will be plenty of local talent to root for. Five current U of O athletes and five freshmen recruits will compete on their home track. One of the veteran Ducks is Maggie Schmaedick, a 2013 Sheldon High School graduate. She enters Sunday's 5K race with the country's fastest junior time.

Oregon Men Earn National Track & Field Championship Title

The University of Oregon men's track and field team ended a 30-year dry spell by earning the national title at Hayward Field Saturday. The Oregon women took third in the NCAA Championships held in Eugene.

More than 11,000 fans packed the stands at Hayward Field on the final day of competition. The crowd finally saw the sun break through the thick clouds in the men's 1500 meter; Oregon senior Mac Fleet won his last collegiate race.

Galen Rupp Breaks American 10K Record

They scheduled the best for last at “distance night” of the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene: the 10,000 meter race.

The crowd stayed until after 9 pm to cheer for Galen Rupp, a native of Oregon and former U of O star. Rupp reportedly asked for a fast 10K race.

The Nike Oregon Project runner hoped to break his own American record, set in 2011. As the laps ticked by, he remained in the lead group of four to six runners, holding a pace almost equal to his record time. But with two laps to go, he took the lead.

Track Town On Track For World Junior Championships

This week, Eugene is hosting representatives from the International Association of Athletics Federations, track and field's governing body. They are reviewing progress for July's World Junior Championships, being held in the United States for the first time.

Abby Hoffman is a four-time Olympian and a member of the IAAF Council. She says this visit is focused on logistics, such as coordinating with the U of O to house and feed an estimated 1,600 athletes.
