Healthcare Workers In Lincoln City Rally For Fair Wages & Benefits

Health care workers and their supporters held picket signs and rallied for fair wages and benefits Thursday outside Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital.

Last November about 120 hospital employees in Lincoln City voted to unionize and join SEIU Local 49. Union spokesman Jesse Stemmler says they've been bargaining with hospital management since then. But he says the workers don't feel they're receiving the same compensation as those at other Samaritan hospitals, including Newport, Corvallis and Albany.

Public Input Sought For Marine Reserves

The Oregon legislature recently designated two areas along the coast as marine reserves. The state hopes to involve the public in the new sites.

Cape Perpetua north of Florence and Cascade Head near Lincoln City join two marine reserves already protected by a 2012 law. In 2016, Cape Falcon near Cannon Beach will round out the coastal sites.

What To Do About Lincoln County's Aging Fairgrounds?

The Lincoln County Fairgrounds is suffering from years of neglect. Officials are starting to consider options to renovate or rebuild some of the facilities.

"Poor." That's the word Lincoln County Commissioner Bill Hall used to describe the state of the Fairgrounds. He says numerous buildings are worn down, and rising operating costs are prompting the county to look at options for the property.

Oregon State Police Volunteers Patrol Lincoln County School Neighborhoods

Oregon State Police volunteers are patrolling the neighborhoods around public schools in Lincoln County.

The OSP volunteers have been active in Lincoln County for more than 25 years. This is the first time they’ve specifically worked on school safety. They approached the school district after the Sandy Hook shooting in Connecticut. Sue Graves is the Safety Coordinator for Lincoln County Schools. She says the volunteers go through background checks and training with OSP. They are not police officers and are unarmed.
