Small Fire Briefly Shuts Down Mt. Pisgah and Buford Park Recreation Area

A fire earlier this afternoon briefly closed the Howard Buford Recreation Area southeast of Eugene. The fire is now fully contained. The north side of the area will remain closed as crews monitor and investigate the blaze. Mount Pisgah and the arboretum are open to visitors.

The Oregon Department of Forestry responded with a helicopter to dump water on the blaze. It burned a little more than an acre.

ODF crews are performing mop-up operations. The area will be monitored throughout the weekend by Lane County Parks staff and volunteers.

The Gilchrist State Forest south of Bend is adding nearly 29,000 acres. The Board of Forestry approved completion of the multi-year acquisition Wednesday.

Legislators first approved the purchase in 2010. The State acquired 43,000 acres that became the first new Oregon State Forest in 60 years. At the same time, The Conservation Fund bought about 25,000 acres directly adjacent with the intention of eventually selling it to the Oregon Department of Forestry. ODF spokesman John Pellissier says they aren't usually in the habit selling or purchasing land.

Hot-shot crews and volunteers weren’t the only ones fighting fires in Oregon this year. More than 800 inmates from the state’s correctional institutions worked side-by-side combating blazes.

The State Department of Corrections and the Oregon Department of Forestry have teamed up since 1951 to fight wildfires. Inmates go through the same nationally certified training course as civilians do. DOC Communications Manager Elizabeth Craig says the program benefits both the forests and the inmates.
