Oregon Democrats Choose New Majority Leader

In a caucus election held Thursday the party chose Representative Jennifer Williamson from Southwest Portland.  The post has been held for the past 4 years by Junction City Democrat Val Hoyle, who stepped aside to explore a bid for Oregon Secretary of State, which comes up for election in 2016.  Williamson takes over the Majority Leader position August 1st.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife

A decline in revenue at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is putting the agency's financial health at risk. A recent audit from the Secretary of State is raising questions about the Department's business model.

Since the 1970's, fewer people have been buying hunting and fishing licenses, which analysts say is a reflection of a nationwide trend. The licenses are the largest part of the ODFW's annual operating budget; it generated more than a billion dollars in 2013. Gary Blackmer is the Director of the Secretary of State's Audit Division.

Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown says Governor John Kitzhaber's troubles have created a quote, "bizarre and unprecedented situation." Brown issued a statement Thursday morning to explain why she abruptly left a conference in Washington DC Wednesday and flew home to Oregon. She says she returned at the request of the governor, who is under immense political pressure as he deals with an ethics scandal. But Brown says when she arrived, the governor questioned why she had come.

Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown launched a wave of speculation in the state capitol Wednesday by abruptly leaving a conference she was attending in Washington, DC. Brown is first in line of succession to the governor’s office. The Governor and his fiancée, Cylvia Hayes are facing criminal investigations over allegations they used his office for personal gain.
Salem Correspondent Chris Lehman says a spokesman for Brown offered no explanation for her leaving the conference two days early.

Jay Bozievich and Faye Stewart were not defeated by opponents in the May Primary. They were elected to another 4-year term on the Lane County Board of Commissioners, according to final election results released Friday.

Bozievich beat Dawn Lesley by 75 votes in the West Lane race, so there won't be a run-off in November.

Stewart won the East Lane race over four opponents, avoiding a runoff against top challenger Kevin Matthews by just seven votes.

After being hacked more than two weeks ago, the website for the Oregon Secretary of State's Office is still not fully functional. According to the state, the computer hacking was allegedly perpetrated by foreign entities. Law enforcement is investigating. The site is undergoing emergency repairs.
