Oregon Defeats Stanford, Beavers Lose Third In A Row

The University of Oregon Ducks Overcame their 2 season hump against Stanford, Saturday. The fifth-ranked Ducks routed The Cardinal 45 to 16 at Autzen Stadium. Quarterback and Heisman candidate Marcus Mariota threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more scores.

Oregon climbed to No. 2 in the AP rankings this season but stumbled with a home loss to Arizona in October. The Ducks have since recovered and they're gunning for the inaugural playoffs.

Hygienic funeral and patient isolation practices are key factors to ending Ebola in West Africa. That's according to a study published by an Oregon State University researcher.

The study says current containment practices will likely cause the disease to continue to expand by more than 200 cases in Liberia by December. Jan Medlock teaches Biomedical Sciences at OSU. He says the disease is most contagious around the time of death, which means hygienic funeral practices are essential to preventing further infections.

Ducks Run Over Northwest Rival Washington

The 9th Ranked University of Oregon Ducks routed their Northwest Rival, the Washington Huskies, 45 to 20 Saturday night. Freshman Royce Freeman ran for 169 yards and four touchdowns, the most in a single game for a Duck since Kenjon Barner, who had five against USC in 2012.

The Ducks extended their winning streak over Washington to 11 straight games and celebrated the 20th anniversary of "The Pick." The interception turned touchdown against Washington in 1994 is considered by most Duck fans to be a pivotal shift in the football program, ushering in the current era of success.

Ducks Rebound After Arizona Loss Against UCLA

The University of Oregon Ducks rebounded after last week's loss to Arizona. The Ducks knocked off the UCLA Bruins in Los Angeles 42 to 30, Saturday.

Quarterback MARCUS MARIOTA threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for two more.

The Oregon State Beavers had a bye this week. They face Utah this Thursday night in Reeser Stadium.

A new exercise DVD adds short breaks of physical activity in elementary students' routine. It is proving to be popular with teachers. Oregon State University recently published research on applications in the classroom.

"Brain Breaks" features 5 to 7 minute segments focusing on stretching, physical activity, and relaxation. It's meant for situations in the classroom when the teacher notices students becoming distracted or rowdy. OSU Assistant Professor Gerd Bobe says current curriculum focused primarily on academics.

OSU-Cascades, the Oregon State University campus in Bend, has taken another step toward becoming a four-year university. Currently, it offers only upper division courses.  Some 46 acres could be added to the campus following a tentative approval given to the purchase of a former pumice mine.   A study by Carlson Geotechnical found no areas of significant instability while citing the need for improvements to the site.

OSU Opens Food Preservation And Safety Hotline

Monday, Oregon State University opened its food preservation and safety hotline for another season of summer and fall harvesting.

Certified Master Food Preservers are standing by to answer any questions Oregonians might have on food preservation and safety. Nelly Oehler oversees the Master Food Preserver program in Lane and Douglas Counties. She says the phone line is a reliable source and that some out-dated information on the internet can be dangerous.

OSU To Offer MOOC Class This Fall

Oregon State University is poised to launch its first Massive, Open Online Course, or MOOC. The popularity of the free and credit-less classes have risen in recent years.

The eight-week course is called "Supporting English Language Learners under New Standards." It's targeted to K-12 educators. OSU Assistant Professor Karen Thompson says the course is designed to help implement the new Common Core Standards States are required to adopt. She says it's doubtful MOOC's will replace or threaten traditional education.

OSU Graduates A Record-size Class

As the school year comes to an end, Oregon State University will celebrate with a record size graduating class.

OSU’s class of 2014 is the largest in the school’s history. Nearly 5,900 students will be graduating this Saturday. That’s even more than last year’s record breaking class.  The three departments with the most graduates are Liberal Arts, Engineering, and Business.

Last summer, the Oregon legislature approved $3.5 million seed funding for the South Willamette Valley Regional Accelerator and Innovation Network (RAIN). RAIN’s goal is economic development for our area, which is slowly making the transition from a dependence on natural resources to a knowledge-based economy.

City of Newport

For years, residents of Newport have raised concerns about effluent from a Georgia Pacific Mill in Toledo.  Since 1957, the company has pumped it’s wastewater through a pipe that discharges into the ocean, about .75 miles off Nye Beach.  A new study from Oregon State University is adding to a growing body of evidence showing the effluent is not causing significant impact on the surrounding environment.

Oregon State University has fired Men's Head Basketball Coach Craig Robinson.  

Just two months ago OSU Athletic Director Bob de Carolis announced Robinson would remain in his position.  He addressed the recent change of heart at a press conference Monday afternoon.

The #1 ranked Oregon Ducks softball team completed their Civil War series with Oregon State Monday with a sweep.

In the final game in Corvallis, the Ducks crushed the Beavers 18-0, after winning games on Saturday and Sunday.

Over the course of the three-game series, Oregon outscored OSU 38 to 7.  The Ducks should stay at #1 in this week's national rankings.  
 

Oregon Softball Makes History With #1 Ranking

The University of Oregon softball team hit a milestone this week.  For the first time in school history, they are the number one team in the country.

The top ranking comes after the Ducks won two in a three-game series against then-number-one UCLA.  After the final game Sunday, senior utility player Kailee Cuico told Oregon Sports Network the series showed what the team could do.

Student enrollment at OSU grew at a rate of 8% a year for several years. That population increase sparked a community livability initiative by OSU president Ed Ray and Corvallis Mayor Julie Manning.

It was a Civil War battle Wednesday night in the first round of the PAC-12 Tournament.  The number Ducks played the Beavers in Las Vegas, and the U of O walked away with the victory. 

Oregon and Oregon State had already met twice this season, with each team chalking a win.  The Ducks entered the PAC-12 Tournament with momentum though, having won their previous seven games.

The Oregon State women’s basketball team made it to final of the PAC-12 tournament this weekend, only to fall short against the USC Trojans on Sunday. 

Oregon State was within five points with less than a minute to go, but ended up losing 71-62. 

The Beavers went into the tournament a number 3 seed, having won their final nine regular-season games.   But USC was even hotter in the tournament.  They defeated Stanford, one of the best teams in the country, in the semifinals.

2013 was a really dry year for Oregon. Climate scientists at Oregon State University say it was the driest on record for Eugene despite a soggy September.

Deputy Director of the Oregon Climate Service at OSU Kathie Dello says Eugene saw less than half of its normal precipitation this year. Dello says September brought a lot of rain but not enough to make up for the rest of the year. The snow-storm in early December was very dry. Dello spoke by cell from a ski trip in the Cascades.

Oregon State University has launched a new center aimed at strengthening local food systems.

OSU's Center for Small Farms and Community Food Systems is under the umbrella of the Extension Service. It is tapping into the continuing growth in local and organic food. Director Garry Stephenson says their goal at the center is to help Oregon farmers take advantage of consumer demand.

Ducks and Beavers Roll on a Rainy Saturday

In the pouring rain last night at Autzen Stadium, The University of Oregon walloped California 55 to 16.  The game was essentially decided in the first quarter, when several Cal mistakes allowed the Ducks to open up a 27-0 lead.  The rain caused miscues and turnovers on both sides.  Oregon fumbled once – it was the first turnover by the ducks the entire season.

Oregon State was also victorious yesterday at home, defeating Colorado 44 to 17.  It was a day for the record books for Beaver quarterback Sean Mannion, who threw six touchdown passes and set a school record.
