Next week, “frontline” workers like surgical support aides and housekeepers at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Hospitals in Eugene and Springfield will vote whether or not to unionize.

Chris Tonry has worked in patient admissions at Sacred Heart for 36 years. She has never been a part of union. Next week, she plans to check the “yes” box to join Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 49. Tonry believes a union could help with inadequate pay raises and understaffing.

The State Medical Examiner's Office has now confirmed the death of an 18-year old U of O student athlete was caused by a highly contagious Meningitis infection.

Half way through a press conference Friday afternoon, Senior Public Health Officer Dr. Pat Luedtke was handed a note. Then he announced:

Dr. Luedtke: "We heard from the medical examiner's office that due to a preponderance of evidence, he will be signing the death certificate that in fact this fourth case is Neisseria meningitides sero group B related to the outbreak. So that would confirm four cases."

Nurses at PeaceHealth Medical Center RiverBend and University District continue to seek public support through an online petition. Understaffing is at the core of their campaign. For years, the hospital has been cited in hundreds of staffing request forms filled out by floor nurses when patient care is affected because units are short-staffed.

Hospital management insists the problem is being resolved. I spoke with PeaceHealth’s new Chief Administrative Officer, Rand O’Leary, about nurses’ workplace concerns and how the hospital is addressing them.

Sacred Heart’s RiverBend hospital in Springfield has a new EmX stop that is closer to the facility. About 50 supporters and dignitaries attended a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday (today).

Land Transit District’s EmX now stops at the Pavilion station located on RiverBend Drive. It provides direct access to Lane County’s largest medical center for thousands of patients and employees. U.S. Senator Ron Wyden stressed the importance of expanding public transportation.

Northwest Mothers Milk Bank

PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend will now accept donations of breast milk. It's the first hospital-based project of its kind in Lane County. KLCC's Tiffany Eckert reports how the new milk drop site works.

Midwives and health care practitioners have long known mother's milk is the best food an infant can get. But, sometimes a woman can't produce milk for her new born. That's when other mothers can help.
