Challenger In Roseburg Mayor Race Thinks A New Face Would Be Good For City.

The City of Roseburg has two candidates on the ballot for mayor this year. Incumbent Larry Rich has served 8 terms as mayor. He is being challenged by Transportation Planning Manager, Mike Baker.

Larry Rich works as the Assistant Principle at Roseburg High School. He’s proud of infrastructure projects he’s worked on including the Highway 138 Corridor and Waterfront Improvements. Rich describes himself as the same person regardless if there is an election going on.

Job Fair For Veterans And Military Spouses In Roseburg Wednesday

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation is hosting a “Hiring Our Heroes” event for veterans and their spouses in Roseburg Wednesday.

The job fairs for vets were launched three years ago. As a result, more than 1,500 companies have hired about 23,000 veterans and military spouses, according to the Chamber of Commerce. Spokesman Phillip Maas, who retired from the Army after a 25-year career, says Wednesday’s event in Roseburg will have a variety of employers.

Douglas County Commissioners Face Packed Ballot

Voters in Douglas County have seven candidates to choose from for County Commission Position Two.

Joe Laurence is vacating his Douglas County Commissioner spot, so none of the seven candidates are incumbents. If no one receives over 50 percent of the vote, the top two candidates will face a runoff in November.

Officials Break Ground On New Veterans Health Facility In Eugene

It’s been years in coming.   Officials broke ground on a new Veterans health facility in Eugene Monday afternoon.  

The site of the future Veterans Health Care Center in North Eugene sits within eye shot of I-5.  That’s the same interstate veterans in Lane County now travel long distances on to get health services not provided at the current small clinic in Eugene.    Oregon Representative Peter DeFazio spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony.

Umpqua Health Center Receives Affordable Care Act Grant

Four healthcare sites in Oregon were awarded grants from the affordable care act Thursday. The funds, totaling over $2.3 million, will be used to bring community-based care to those who need it most.

The Umpqua Community Health Center in Roseburg was chosen to receive 316-thousand dollars. The money will be used to open and provide support for a new clinic in Sutherlin. Development Director Brenda Lewis says north Douglas County is currently underserved. She's excited because the benefits from the grant will be felt quite soon:

Two ODFW Employees Injured on South Umpqua Helicopter Crash

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says two of its employees were injured Monday in a helicopter accident near Days Creek.  ODFW identifies the two passengers as 34-year-old Holly Huchko and 35-year-old Eric Himmelreich, both of whom work out of the Roseburg office for the Umpqua Fish District.  Huchko suffered a broken back and Himmelreich broke two vertebrae.  Pilot Fred Wittlake suffered broken ribs and a broken arm.
