President Barack Obama arrived in Eugene on Air Force One just before noon today (Friday)-- before heading to Roseburg to meet with victims of the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College. KLCC's Tiffany Eckert joined the Whitehouse Press Pool at the Eugene Airport.

Oregon Governor Kate Brown headed for Roseburg this afternoon (Thursday) to help the community. She addressed reporters earlier today.

Brown: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We are holding the community of Douglas County in our hearts today. The work that first responders have done is harrowing. To our first responders: Thank you for your work, as this community reels from grief."

President Obama has also been briefed on the shooting.

A male shooter went on a rampage at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg this morning.

Monday night, the Roseburg City Council voted narrowly to allow the sale of recreational pot in medical marijuana dispensaries starting in October. Following passionate testimony and deliberations, the Council decided--5 to 3— not to ban recreational pot sales through the city's five medical marijuana dispensaries.

Steve Kaser has been a Roseburg city councilor for 6 years. He says the arguments went back and forth. One was that neither the city nor Douglas County supported Measure 91 to legalize marijuana statewide. So, the city should be allowed to choose its own fate now.

The City of Roseburg has two candidates on the ballot for mayor this year. Incumbent Larry Rich has served 8 terms as mayor. He is being challenged by Transportation Planning Manager, Mike Baker.

Larry Rich works as the Assistant Principle at Roseburg High School. He’s proud of infrastructure projects he’s worked on including the Highway 138 Corridor and Waterfront Improvements. Rich describes himself as the same person regardless if there is an election going on.

Hiring Our Heroes

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation is hosting a “Hiring Our Heroes” event for veterans and their spouses in Roseburg Wednesday.

The job fairs for vets were launched three years ago. As a result, more than 1,500 companies have hired about 23,000 veterans and military spouses, according to the Chamber of Commerce. Spokesman Phillip Maas, who retired from the Army after a 25-year career, says Wednesday’s event in Roseburg will have a variety of employers.

Oregon Congressman Peter DeFazio spoke out Friday about the problems plaguing the Veterans Administration, including struggles in his home state.

Voters in Douglas County have seven candidates to choose from for County Commission Position Two.

Joe Laurence is vacating his Douglas County Commissioner spot, so none of the seven candidates are incumbents. If no one receives over 50 percent of the vote, the top two candidates will face a runoff in November.
