  Roseburg’s free concert series, Music on the Half Shell, celebrates its 25th anniversary season in 2016. Kelly Leonard speaks with Eric Alan about a unique tradition of connection between audience and artists. He also shares music from a few of this year’s performers, including Luisa Maita (“loo-EE-suh MY-tuh”), Leroy Bell, James Hunter and Pink Martini.

A California couple has donated a valuable lot of land in Roseburg. They’ve asked a local non-profit to develop it for veteran housing.


  The percussion and flute duo Caballito Negro  brings Songlines to Corvallis on February 19th, Lincoln City on February 27th and Roseburg on February 28th. Songlines is a set of performances and workshops that takes listeners from South Africa to Turkmenistan and even Los Angeles. Band members Tessa Brinckman and Terry Longshore share music and conversation with Eric Alan.

President Barack Obama arrived in Eugene on Air Force One just before noon today (Friday)-- before heading to Roseburg to meet with victims of the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College. KLCC's Tiffany Eckert joined the Whitehouse Press Pool at the Eugene Airport.

President Barack Obama landed in Roseburg, Oregon this Friday afternoon to meet with families of the victims of last weeks shooting at Umpqua Community College.  Rachael McDonald is traveling with the White House Press Pool.

Oregon Governor Kate Brown headed for Roseburg this afternoon (Thursday) to help the community. She addressed reporters earlier today.

Brown: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We are holding the community of Douglas County in our hearts today. The work that first responders have done is harrowing. To our first responders: Thank you for your work, as this community reels from grief."

President Obama has also been briefed on the shooting.

Monday night, the Roseburg City Council voted narrowly to allow the sale of recreational pot in medical marijuana dispensaries starting in October. Following passionate testimony and deliberations, the Council decided--5 to 3— not to ban recreational pot sales through the city's five medical marijuana dispensaries.

Steve Kaser has been a Roseburg city councilor for 6 years. He says the arguments went back and forth. One was that neither the city nor Douglas County supported Measure 91 to legalize marijuana statewide. So, the city should be allowed to choose its own fate now.

The City of Roseburg has two candidates on the ballot for mayor this year. Incumbent Larry Rich has served 8 terms as mayor. He is being challenged by Transportation Planning Manager, Mike Baker.

Larry Rich works as the Assistant Principle at Roseburg High School. He’s proud of infrastructure projects he’s worked on including the Highway 138 Corridor and Waterfront Improvements. Rich describes himself as the same person regardless if there is an election going on.
