4J School District Seeks Input On New Superintendent

The Eugene 4J School District has begun its search for a new superintendent. Dr. Sheldon Berman is leaving the job in June. As a first step, the school board wants to create a profile of the ideal candidate. Kerry Delf is the Communications Coordinator for the district:

Delf: “As with the last time we were seeking a new superintendent, the school board has hired an executive search firm to help conduct that process. This is a nationwide search. The school board will be looking at any local and regional candidates as well as anybody who applies from across the nation.”

4J, YMCA Reach Tentative Agreement On Roosevelt Land

The Eugene 4J School District and the YMCA appear to have found common ground this week in efforts to relocate the recreational facility. They’ve agreed to tentative terms for the “Y” to purchase land at 24th and Hilyard.

The proposal would give the Eugene Family YMCA the option to purchase the Roosevelt Middle School property for 2.85 million dollars. That’s nearly double the Y’s September offer of 1.5 million. Dave Perez, the YMCA’s Executive Director, says he’s confident the nonprofit will be able to raise the money:

City Club of Eugene: What Will Move Oregon Education Forward?

September 19, 2014 City Club of Eugene airs Monday, September 22, 2014 on KLCC.

Moving Oregon education forward requires both short- and long-term planning. Superintendent Berman will discuss some strategies that have the potential for helping along that forward movement. He will address their alignment with statewide strategic education initiatives such as the Common Core State Standards and the Smarter Balanced assessments.

"Bottom of 16th": Civic Stadium Vote Expected

Wednesday night the Eugene 4j School Board will decide if they will accept the City of Eugene’s offer to purchase historic Civic Stadium. 

The district received three bids for the properties in South Eugene – one each from Fred Meyer, the YMCA, and the City of Eugene.  Superintendent Sheldon Berman has recommended the district accept the City’s offer. At a 4J School Board Meeting in early February, board members seemed tired of the issue, which they have been dealing with for the past decade.

School Superintendent Recommends The City Of Eugene Purchase Civic Stadium

Superintendent Sheldon Berman is recommending the 4J School Board select The City of Eugene's offer of 4.5 million dollars to purchase the Civic Stadium Properties.

Berman acknowledged the district is currently strained financially. He said there were three main reasons he came to his decision.
