At a special meeting Thursday night the Springfield School Board formally selected Assistant Superintendent Sue Reike-Smith to be the district's Acting Superintendent. She will take over for Hertica Martin who announced her resignation Monday.

Reike-Smith says besides the contractual duties of a superintendent, she plans to keep doing what she always does, visit schools and interface with teachers and students. The focus of her new role is on the last ten weeks of school.

Garry Weber will step down on July 31 after serving on the Springfield public schools board for 15 years. Weber says he feels it’s time to step down from the position and open it to a parent of a current student in the school system.

The Springfield board of education is now seeking someone to fill the position. Applicants do not need to live in a certain area of Springfield to qualify. The board will appoint a new member to serve out the remainder of the current term which expires June 2015.

Lane County students are enjoying winter break this week. However, due to the snowstorm in early December, schools will be in session for additional days in 2014.

According to Eugene 4J School District's Kerry Delf, before make-up days were announced, they heard this feedback from parents and staff:

Delf: "Please please please, add these days back during the school year, if you can, rather than adding them on to the end of the year while still having furlough days. So that is in fact what we did."
