The expanded U of O Student Recreation Center had its grand opening today. It includes 110,000 square feet of new space, including pools, studios, and gyms.

On day one, the shiny, new high tech spaces are already bustling with activity. Kevin Marbury is the Director of Physical Education at the U of O. He says the construction has been smooth, on budget and on time.

Oreson State Uninversity

A new exercise DVD adds short breaks of physical activity in elementary students' routine. It is proving to be popular with teachers. Oregon State University recently published research on applications in the classroom.

"Brain Breaks" features 5 to 7 minute segments focusing on stretching, physical activity, and relaxation. It's meant for situations in the classroom when the teacher notices students becoming distracted or rowdy. OSU Assistant Professor Gerd Bobe says current curriculum focused primarily on academics.

University of Oregon Students Move In

The University of Oregon welcomed 3,000 new students Thursday and volunteers were waiting to help. The annual “Unpack the Quack” allows faculty and staff to help new students move in. KLCC’s Corinne Boyer sent us this audio postcard from campus.

The UO brings the benefits of research and innovation, economic development, and employment opportunities. It brings new ideas, resources, and diverse people into the community.

Lane Community College

Classes begin next week at Lane Community College. LCC President Mary Spilde talks with KLCC's Rachael McDonald about expectations for the coming year. The college is experiencing a drop in enrollment which means a possible $2 million budget deficit. But Spilde is hopeful the legislature will restore some state funding to community colleges when it meets for a special session in Salem Monday.
