Caregivers and service employees in Eugene and Springfield voted to unionize Thursday night at  Sacred Heart PeaceHealth Medical Center. The nearly 11-hundred employees will now be members of the nation’s largest health care union. 

After the ballots were tallied, the “yes” votes took it.

“My name is Meg Neimi. I’m President of SEIU Local 49, the health care union. And, I’m standing right outside of Sacred Heart RiverBend Medical Center with a group of health care workers who are celebrating the fact that they have just won their union election resoundingly.”

McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center in Springfield issued a press release Wednesday saying it wanted to correct inaccurate information about its most recent proposal submitted October 17 to the union bargaining committee.

Unionized hospital staff began a three-day strike Tuesday, saying they've been working without a contract for nearly a year.

The Springfield hospital says it's proposing a 14-month contract and a 2.75-percent wage increase.

The graduate teaching fellows union at the University of Oregon is bargaining for a new contract. They want a higher minimum salary and expanded health care coverage.

A group of over 100 graduate student teachers and their supporters gathered in front of Johnson Hall Friday. They spoke about the need to raise compensation packages in order to attract high-quality graduate students.
