In time for Veterans Day, Groups in Lane County are launching an effort to end veteran homelessness by 2016. Operation 365 aims to house one veteran each day between now and a year from now.

The local effort is part of a nation-wide program. St Vincent de Paul of Lane County has been awarded a federal 3 year grant of 3-million dollars to help. St. Vinnies Executive Director Terry McDonald:

McDonald: "We have the outreach and the opportunity to make this ambition goal and we're going to make a run at it."

Matthew Halls, artistic director of the Oregon Bach Festival, speaks with Eric Alan about “Deep in My Soul Forever Stay,” a concert of remembrance for Veterans Day, presented on Sunday, November 9th. The interview includes music from Purcell, MacMillan and Bruckner.

Dexter Lake was the site of Lane County's first ever Dragon Boat race on Saturday. The event was aimed at helping disabled veterans.

Standing under a gazebo by the western shore of Dexter Lake, teams of 15 to 20 people chant and pump each other up for the upcoming race. More than 200 people, or a dozen teams showed up to compete this weekend. Erin Zysett, the Board President of the Emerald City Dragon Boat Club, tries to manage the logistics of making sure which team is racing and when.

Zysett: "It's organized chaos but it's a lot of fun."

From Marines to beauty queens, the 14th Annual Springfield Veteran's Day Parade had the largest number of entries ever. The parade honors all who served in the Armed Services. KLCC's Tiffany Eckert was along the parade route Sunday afternoon and has this report.

As the parade begins, on-lookers line the streets waving small American flags. Eugene Highlander bagpipe band marches behind the color guard. (bagpipes playing) Excited kids stand at the ready to catch the candy that flies from parade floats. This is one of the ways the city of Springfield pays respect for veterans.

Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs

For those enjoying a 3-day weekend, the day off is to remember and honor those men and women who've served in the military. In Oregon, the day will be marked with a solemn ceremony in Salem.

Twice a year on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, the names of the fallen are added to the Afghan-Iraqi Freedom Memorial Wall. It's located on the grounds of the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs. Mike Allegre says they will be adding three new names to the wall.
