4J Moves Ahead With Local Option Levy Renewal, Roosevelt Middle Land Sale Process

Residents of the Eugene 4J School District will decide this November whether to continue tax support for local schools.  Wednesday night, the School Board voted to put a local option levy on the ballot that would fund the district to the tune of $8 million per year.

    

Board member Jim Torrey said the district was already stretched, and losing the funds would have major consequences.

Public And Board Respond To Civic Stadium Sale Recommendation

Earlier this week, 4J Schools Superintendent Sheldon Berman recommended the sale of the Civic Stadium properties to the City of Eugene, over competing bids from Fred Meyer and the YMCA.  A final decision by the 4J Board is still two weeks away.  Wednesday night, Board members heard community response to the recommendation.

Fans Want Soccer At Civic Stadium

Proponents of refurbishing Eugene's historic Civic Stadium into a soccer venue are continuing to gather community support. About 50 people attended a rally Saturday that started downtown and ended at the Stadium.

Fans of the Lane United Football Club and the group, Save Civic Stadium hope the 4-J District considers an option to turn the aging venue into a soccer field. Protester Jac Thomas says soccer is popular in Oregon, and Eugene could support a semi-pro team.

Guest Speakers: Representatives of Fred Meyer, the YMCA, and School District 4J to be announced

Eugene School District 4J categorized the 10-acre site as surplus property in 2002. About three years ago, 4J had three responses to its request for proposals to purchase, lease, or trade the property. All were declined.

Once again this fall, those who seek to preserve the historic stadium will vie with those who propose commercial and organizational developments.
